Mr. Wonderful Top 10 Films of 2016

December 29, 2016

As we wind down and get ready to ring in 2017 lets take a minute to remember this past year at the movies. Some films delivered beyond expectations while others didn’t live up to the hype. Either way here is my Top 10 list of movies from this past year. (Side Note: at the I wrote this was I have not seen Moana, Fantastic Beasts or La La Land yet. Those are the last 3 films of the year I wanted to see.)

10.) Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice:

Say what you want about this film but I enjoyed this movie. It did establish the Justice League and accomplished the goal of creating the DC Comics Cinematic Univers. Not to mention this movie is the reason we are getting a stand alone Ben Affleck Batman movie in the next couple years also.

9.) Don’t Breathe:

If you passed on this late summer horror movie you missed out on one of the most suspenseful films this past year. A great follow up in the horror genre from director Fede Alvarez after the successful Evil Dead Remake.

8.) The Nice Guys:

Similar to Don’t Breathe this was a sleeper film. Coming out around the start of the summer blockbusters this throwback “buddy buddy” comedy staring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling will take you back to a 1970s Los Angeles with two private eyes having to come together to solve a mysterious death. Filled with great action, comedy and an amazing cast this film will win your heart while keeping you on the edge of your seat from the action.

7.) Hacksaw Ridge:

Mel Gibson is back with this True Story about a conscientus objector Desmond T. Doss who saved 75 Men during the bloodiest battle of WWII. This was a stunning and amazing story. Similar to when he directed Bravehart this film will leave you speechless by the story and visuals showing the results of War.

6.) The Conjuring 2:

This was without a doubt the best horror film of 2016 and continues to tell the stories of Lorraine & Ed Warren battling malicious spirits. This film scared audiences so much that the Nun has her own spinoff film in the works not to mention is the first film in years to have me scream a curse word at the screen.

5.) Captain America: Civil War:

This film continued the Marvel Cinematic Universe story. It also gave hope that you can have that many big name actors and superheroes on one screen. It was the ultimate comic book movie giving us Black Panther and a nice lead in to the rest of Phase Three and was everything you wanted and more if you have been a fan of the MCU since the beginning.

4.) Ghostbusters:

Say what you want about the reboot but this was a fun film and in my opinion one of the best comedies we got this past summer. With hat tips to the originals it still carved its own path while keeping true to the universe we came to love growing up. This film oozed with entertainment and fun just like the original films.

3.) Star Trek Beyond:

Absolutely the best film from the new crew & in my opinion the best film this past summer. Following Khan 2.0 this film basically errasing what happened and tells a new story that will remind you of the Original Series. You get truly amazing moments between the crew members, specially Bones and Spock that has that natural feel the Original Crew did so well.

2.) Deadpool:

Maybe the best Valentines Day movie ever released. This little film about an obscure X-Men Character turned out to be one of the best Marvel Comic Book films released in the past couple years. Not to mention this film has opened the door for Comic Book movies to take that extra step and go for the R rating. Just look to the upcoming 2017 Logan movie that is taking that Deadpool approach & looks to be darker than anything we have ever seen.

1.) Rogue One: A Star Wars Story:

Maybe it’s a cliche move to name a Star Wars movie as the best film of the year but no other movie truly left the entire audience as a doughy eyed as this movie. From start to finish and absoluet delight for anyone who grew up loving the Star Wars films or anyone just looking for a fun action movie.
