Phillip Phillips is the new 'American Idol'

To no one’s surprise, Phillip Phillips was crowned the 11th "American Idol" last night. He was the fifth male "Idol" winner in a row. He received the winning share of a record 132M votes. The last female to win, and the last non-white, was Jordin Sparks in 2007.

A night of stars, and an engagement

The “American Idol” finale was an all-star event. Performers included Jordin Sparks, Fantasia, Neil Diamond, Rihanna, Chaka Khan, John Fogarty, Aerosmith, Jennifer Lopez, and Jennifer Holliday. Former contestants Ace Young and Diana DeGarmo got engaged on stage.

Phillip Phillips to have surgery

Phillip Phillips will undergo kidney surgery in Georgia after completing publicity duties for “American Idol.” His health has plagued him throughout the season. He has a press tour in New York today. He may miss 1 or 2 dates on the "American Idol" tour this summer.

'G.I. Joe' gets new marching orders, moves to 2013

G.I. Joe won't be going into action on the big-screen this summer, after all. Paramount Pictures yanked its sequel "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" from its June 29 release date and rescheduled the movie for March 29 next year. The film will be converted to 3-D.

3 Doors Down guitarist Matt Roberts leaves band

3 Doors Down founding member and guitarist Matt Roberts has left the band because of health problems. A website statement says he has problems with blood circulation and other health issues. It calls the split amicable. The band was formed in Mississippi in 1996.

Justin Bieber has announced plans for a headlining North American concert tour to support his fourth studio album "Believe." Island Def Jam is to release the CD June 19. Carly Rae Jepsen will be special guest. The tour will visit 45 cities (none in Hampton Roads).
